Fish Sticks and Transformation
Growing up Southern Baptist I had no idea what Lent was. I remember fish sticks for school lunch on Fridays but had no idea of the religious significance (Friday is a day of fasting during Lent). Actually I looked forward to those lunches—they were predictable and offered a change from the regular rhythm of the week.
During the last several years Lent has become a meaningful part of the rhythm of the church year for me. Not because it is a time to feel all guilty about my sinfulness (that is one thing the Baptists did teach me!) and not because it is a time to wallow in self denial (although I am always trying to know my self better). Lent is important to me because it gives me an opportunity to be intentional about my spiritual journey.
Certainly, just for forty days I can be more aware of God and my need for God. Certainly, just for forty days I can drop my guard and be vulnerable to the Spirit. Certainly, just for forty days I can be open to the possibility of transformation.
Who knew that fish sticks could be so compelling!
